The congress and its host
The Asian Federation of Laboratory Animal Science Associations (AFLAS) held its 6th congress on 11 and 12 November 2014 at the Royale Chulan Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, after a series of pre-congress workshops. The Laboratory Animal Science Association of Malaysia (LASAM) hosted it, having worked for three years to bring it to Kuala Lumpur, and the organisers expected more than 400 delegates from Malaysia and abroad.
What the congress covered
The congress set out to promote international cooperation in laboratory animal science. Its main themes were animal welfare, animal biology, and capacity building and education, and it also covered anticancer research, drug development, ageing and translational medicine, imaging, and emergency planning for animal facilities. It opened with a keynote from the Department of Veterinary Services on how Malaysia regulates the use of animals in research, and a trade exhibition ran beside the talks.
