From skin cells to the MTT assay: Prima Nexus and cell culture workshops at four Malaysian universities in 2018

From the Prima Nexus archive: a look back at April to November 2018.

SERDANG, 7 November 2018: Prima Nexus co-organised or sponsored cell culture workshops at four universities in 2018. It co-organised a three-day workshop at Universiti Malaya (UM) in April, sponsored a skin cell culture seminar and workshop at the Tissue Engineering Centre, UKM Medical Centre, in June, and co-organised a two-day workshop at Sunway University in October. The last was a two-day fundamental cell culture and MTT assay demonstration workshop at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) on 7 and 8 November, co-organised with the Department of Human Anatomy.

Cell culture at UM, UKM Medical Centre and Sunway

The first of the year's cell culture workshops was at UM, where Prima Nexus and CMBL co-organised a 3 Days Cell Culture and MTT Assay Hands-on Workshop at the Faculty of Medicine from 24 to 26 April. From 26 to 28 June, the Tissue Engineering Centre, on the 12th floor of the Clinical Block at UKM Medical Centre, held a Seminar and Workshop on Skin Cell Culture for Compounds Testing, sponsored by Prima Nexus. At Sunway University, Prima Nexus co-organised a 2-Days Fundamental Cell Culture Hands-on Workshop on 10 and 11 October, in Bio Lab 3 on Level 4 of the New University Building.

Cell culture and the MTT assay at UPM

At UPM, the two-day workshop ran in the Laboratory of Human Anatomy, on the ground floor of Block D at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. Dr Tham Chau Ling and Dr Yong Yoke Keong of UPM, with a Prima Nexus representative, covered the basics of cell culture, aseptic technique, cell culture safety, passaging, cryopreservation, cell counting and the MTT assay, which measures how a compound affects the survival of cells.

Molecular workshops, a symposium and Prima Nexus's part

The same venues also held molecular workshops. The Tissue Engineering Centre ran an RT-PCR Workshop on 3 and 4 October, sponsored by Prima Nexus, and Sunway University held the 2nd Basic to Advanced Oncology and Virology Molecular Diagnostics Workshop 2018 in Bio Lab 2 from 9 to 11 October, co-organised by Prima Nexus. CMBL also held the Stem Cell & Cancer Symposium (SCCS) 2018 at the University of Malaya Alumni Clubhouse on 17 and 18 October, which Prima Nexus sponsored.
