KUALA LUMPUR, 29 October 2026: Prima Nexus Managing Partner Nura Samsuddin attended Bicara Felo Utama on 29 October 2026 at the auditorium of the UKM Medical Molecular Biology Institute (UMBI), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). The speaker was Prof. Datuk Dr A Rahman A Jamal, founding director of UMBI. His talk, “Behind the winning proposals: Lessons, Strategies and Realities from My Research Journey”, was part of Bulan Semarak Penyelidikan UKM 2026, the university's research month.
Behind the winning proposals
Bicara Felo Utama was held from 2.30 pm to 4.00 pm at Auditorium UMBI, hosted by UKM and UMBI. The title set the subject: the lessons, strategies and realities behind a winning research proposal, told from the speaker's own research journey.
A research leader Prima Nexus looks up to
Prof. Datuk Dr A Rahman A Jamal is a professor of paediatric oncology and haematology and of molecular biology, and the founding director of UMBI, set up in 2003. He was appointed project leader of The Malaysian Cohort, a cabinet-approved project with more than 100,000 participants. He has more than 100 publications and has supervised more than 50 postgraduate students.
His research has also reached space. In 2006 he became the first Malaysian scientist to send an experiment to the International Space Station, and in 2007 he was chief scientist for the life sciences experiments when Malaysia sent its first astronaut into space.
Prima Nexus looks up to that record: long-term research, built in Malaysia, with a generation of researchers trained along the way. His book, Navigating Academia, passes those lessons on. UMBI describes it as a candid field guide for early-career scholars, researchers, department heads and leaders.
Why Prima Nexus attended
Prima Nexus works with university and hospital research teams across Malaysia, on services such as genomics and ELISA and Luminex testing, and much of that work begins with a funded proposal. Hearing how a senior researcher thinks about proposals helps Prima Nexus support the teams who write them.
The same goes for the Prima Nexus Joint Research Program, which supports Malaysian researchers with in-kind funding for genomic services. JRP 1.0 applications are open until 30 December 2026. Prima Nexus thanks UKM and UMBI for hosting the talk, and Prof. Datuk Dr A Rahman A Jamal for sharing his journey.
