Two visiting researchers from Japan presented the SDT rat and the SDT fatty rat, a non-obese and an obese model of type 2 diabetes, to researchers at Universiti Putra Malaysia in Serdang.

SERDANG, 27 July 2017: Prima Nexus co-organised, with Nomura Siam International, a seminar on new animal models of type 2 diabetes at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), on 27 July 2017. It was hosted with UPM's Department of Nutrition and Dietetics. At the morning seminar, two visiting researchers from Japan, Dr Takeshi Ohta and Dr Tomohiko Sasase, presented the SDT rat and the SDT fatty rat to researchers.
The seminar and the speakers' tour
The seminar, titled New Animal Models of Type 2 Diabetes: SDT and SDT Fatty Rat, ran from 10.00 am to 12.00 pm in Meeting Room 2 (Bilik Mesyuarat 2) of the faculty. Researchers registered in advance, with registration closing on 21 July 2017. The UPM session was part of a three-day tour by the two speakers through Thailand and Malaysia, from 25 to 27 July 2017. The tour began with a lunch-hour talk in Bangkok on 25 July. After UPM, the speakers gave a second Malaysian seminar the same afternoon, at the UKM Medical Centre (PPUKM) in Cheras.
Two rat models of type 2 diabetes
The programme had two talks. Dr Tomohiko Sasase presented the Spontaneously Diabetic Torii (SDT) rat, a model of type 2 diabetes in which the rats are not obese. Dr Takeshi Ohta presented the SDT fatty rat, a model of type 2 diabetes in which the rats are obese. Together, the two talks covered a non-obese and an obese form of the disease in one morning.
Nomura Siam International said the seminar's main purpose was to share knowledge with researchers who work with animal models, especially diabetic rat models, and to raise interest in animal welfare and better use of laboratory animals in Asian countries.
