KUALA LUMPUR, 27 March 2014: Prima Nexus organised the March 2014 session of the PrimaNexus Discussion Series on Thursday 27 March 2014 at Le Meridien Hotel, KL Sentral, a one-day programme on the importance of using quality diets and bedding for research laboratory animals. The speakers were George Nugent, Director of LabDiet / TestDiet, and Dr Carrie L. Schultz of LabDiet / TestDiet.
The session
The session took place on Thursday 27 March 2014 at Le Meridien Hotel, KL Sentral. It was the March 2014 edition of the PrimaNexus Discussion Series, under the title "Introduction and Understanding the Importance of Using Quality Diets & Bedding for Research Lab Animals". The day ran from a welcome at 08:30 to closing remarks at 16:30. It had four topic sessions, and each one ended with 15 minutes of questions.
What the talks covered
The three morning talks were on laboratory animal diets. The first explained the differences between standard, certified and irradiated diets. The second covered food safety and quality control in the manufacturing of these diets. The third looked at how to choose a diet that meets the needs of the animals and the objectives of the study at the same time. After lunch, the bedding session compared standard, certified and irradiated bedding, and explained the importance of nesting material for thermoregulation, the way animals keep their body temperature steady. An open forum and discussion followed.
Prima Nexus's part and why it mattered
Prima Nexus organised the day. The team gave the agenda briefing in the morning and the closing remarks in the afternoon. For researchers who work with laboratory animals, the programme set out what separates standard, certified and irradiated diets and bedding, and what to weigh when choosing a diet for a study. The question time after each talk and the open forum gave attendees the chance to put their own questions to the speakers.
