SETIA ALAM, SELANGOR, 19 August 2019: Prima Nexus and the Environmental Health Research Centre of the Institute for Medical Research (IMR) organised a five-day hands-on Modelling and Data Analysis Workshop (Bengkel Pemodelan & Data Analisis) at the NIH Complex, Setia Alam, from 19 to 23 August 2019. Earlier that month, Prima Nexus worked with IMR on the Molecular Workshop in Advanced Diagnosis of Thalassemia 2019 in Putrajaya, and in March it sponsored the 8th Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Research Day at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Setia Alam.
Mapping air pollution
The workshop ran in Computer Lab 2, on Level 5 of Block D2 at the NIH Complex, and Prima Nexus co-organised it with the centre. Participants learned to use ENVI and ArcGIS software for spatial and temporal analysis, including estimating PM10 air pollution levels and classifying land use and land cover. PM10 is the dust and other particles in the air that are 10 micrometres across or smaller, small enough to breathe in. The work supported an IMR project on air pollution, deaths and hospital admissions in Malaysia. The photos show participants at rows of computers in the laboratory.
A molecular workshop on thalassemia
From 5 to 7 August, IMR held the Molecular Workshop in Advanced Diagnosis of Thalassemia 2019 at Pulse Grande Hotel, Putrajaya, and Prima Nexus worked with the organisers. Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder in which the body makes too little haemoglobin, and molecular tests look for the gene changes that cause it.
A research day on nasopharyngeal carcinoma
On 27 March, the NPC Research Day Organising Committee held the 8th Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Research Day at the NIH, Setia Alam, and Prima Nexus sponsored it. Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is a cancer of the upper part of the throat, behind the nose.
