KUALA LUMPUR, 31 May 2016: Prima Nexus supported Molecular Medicine Research Day 2016, held by the Department of Molecular Medicine, Universiti Malaya (UM), at the Faculty of Medicine in Kuala Lumpur on 31 May 2016. From 8.00 am to 4.00 pm, the day brought together five talks, research posters and supporters' booths.
A research day at the Faculty of Medicine
The Research Day ran from 8.00 am to 4.00 pm. Registration, the posters and the supporters' booths were at Centrepoint, and the talks were held in the department's lecture theatre. Academics and students registered in advance with the department. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sarni Mat Junit, Head of the Department of Molecular Medicine, gave the welcome remarks, and Prof. Dr. Adeeba Kamarulzaman, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, gave the opening speech.
Five talks, from microRNA to dengue
Five talks filled the morning. Prof. Dr. Fazlul H. Sarkar spoke on microRNA as a molecular bridge between diabetes and cancer, and Prof. Dr. Sekaran Muniandy on dipeptidyl peptidase-4 gene polymorphism. Prof. Dr. Tan Nget Hong covered bioactive proteins from nature, Prof. Dr. Onn Haji Hashim spoke on lectin-based proteomic studies for cancer biomarker discovery, and Prof. Datuk Dr. Rohana Yusof on the design and development of antivirals against dengue.
Between the opening and the talks, participants viewed the posters and visited the supporters' booths over the morning tea break. Lunch was a Science Café in the department's meeting room, supported by the Malaysian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (MSBMB), and the afternoon went back to the posters and booths, with games and afternoon tea.

One of the talks dealt with finding cancer biomarkers through proteomics, the large-scale study of proteins.
