Prima Nexus sponsors UKM's ICAMS 2015 medical science conference and its laboratory animal workshop

KUALA LUMPUR, 14 April 2015: Prima Nexus sponsored the 2nd International Conference on Advances in Medical Science (ICAMS) 2015, organised by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) from 14 to 16 April 2015 under the theme 'Research for a better tomorrow'. The main conference took place at Hotel Concorde Kuala Lumpur, and a workshop on laboratory animal surgery was held at the UKM Medical Centre in Cheras.

Keynote, plenary and symposium

The main programme at Hotel Concorde Kuala Lumpur opened with a keynote by Prof Dato' Dr Rahmah Mohamed, Vice Chancellor of INTI International University, on 'Research for a better tomorrow'. Prof Dr Howard Morris of the University of South Australia gave the plenary lecture on how vitamin D acts to control bone mineral balance. The symposium had four talks: Prof Peter Yan on statins, Assoc Prof Dr Sakthiswary Rajalingham on cardiovascular risk in rheumatic diseases, Dr Nik Ritza Kosai Mahmood on surgery and endoscopic therapy for metabolic syndrome and diabetes, and Assoc Prof Dr Nur Azlina Mohd Fahami on tocotrienol, stress and gastric ulcer.

A workshop on laboratory animals

On 14 April, the Laboratory Animal Surgeries Workshop took place in the Preclinical Building of the UKM Medical Centre, Cheras. Its programme named Prima Nexus and the Pharmacology Department of the UKM Medical Centre as organisers. The aim was to build knowledge and skills in common surgical procedures in laboratory animals. In the morning, invited speaker James Hoffman of InVivos, Singapore, spoke on the importance of specific pathogen free (SPF) animals. Surani Sukor of Prima Nexus was invited to speak on innovation in multiplexing. The afternoon was set aside for surgical technique demonstrations, including ovariectomy and orchidectomy, in the Pharmacology Laboratory.

Why it mattered for researchers

Name tags were prepared for 127 people, including 77 participants, speakers, judges, exhibitors and the organising committee. Many of the oral and poster presentations tested natural products and medicines in cell and animal models, in fields such as pharmacology, cardiovascular disease, cancer and bone health. The two workshop talks, on SPF animals and on multiplexing, were directly related to this kind of study.
