Prima Nexus sponsored two drug development workshops in 2016, at UCSI University and IMR

KUALA LUMPUR, 5 December 2016: Prima Nexus sponsored two workshops on the development of new medicines in 2016: the International Drug Development Workshop 2016 at UCSI University in Kuala Lumpur on 6 August, and Preclinical Models for Drug Development, held by the Institute for Medical Research (IMR) in Kuala Lumpur from 5 to 7 December.

Molecules to medicine at UCSI University

The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at UCSI University held the one-day workshop in the Le Quadri Ballroom at the North Wing of its Kuala Lumpur campus. It set three aims: to learn about the issues and challenges of drug development from industry leaders, to discuss case studies with peers, and to build global collaboration among experts in the pharmaceutical field. The organiser's sponsorship invitation listed three invited speakers: Professor Dr N. Sreeharan, a visiting professor at King's College London, on the search for new medicines; Professor Moses Chow of Western University of Health Sciences in the United States, on herbal medicine for personalised cancer chemotherapy; and Dr Sam Lim of the AstraZeneca Global Medicine Development Centre in China, on the life cycle management of drugs.

Preclinical models at IMR

The Molecular Pathology Unit of IMR organised the December workshop in Meeting Room 2 (BM2) at IMR, with sessions from 8.30am to 4.30pm each day. The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) sponsored the workshop with the Malaysian Institute of Pharmaceuticals and Nutraceuticals (IPharm). The visiting speaker was Dr Elisa de Stanchina, head of the Antitumor Assessment Core Facility at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. Set up in 2003 to support the early discovery of cancer drugs, her facility works with investigators to set up mouse models and to design and run pharmacokinetic, toxicity and efficacy studies. One talk covered testing drug combinations to overcome resistance to B-Raf inhibitors.
