SUNGAI BULOH, 9 August 2016: Prima Nexus sponsored the Workshop on Behavior Testing in Animal Models of Alzheimer's Disease, a half-day workshop held on 9 August 2016 at the Centre for Neuroscience Research, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), in Sungai Buloh. It was one of four concurrent workshops of the IBRO-APRC Associate School of Neuroscience 2016, and the organisers also invited Prima Nexus to provide technical support.
A week-long school on neurodegenerative diseases
The IBRO-APRC Associate School of Neuroscience 2016 ran from 8 to 14 August 2016 at the Faculty of Pharmacy, UiTM, in Puncak Alam. It offered a week of lectures and hands-on training on neurodegenerative diseases to young researchers from the Asia Pacific region, at MBBS, MSc and PhD level. This half-day workshop was one of the school's four concurrent workshops, and its participants travelled to the Centre for Neuroscience Research at UiTM's Faculty of Medicine in Sungai Buloh for the afternoon.
From stereotaxic injection to memory tests
After a welcome and an introduction to the centre, Assoc. Prof. Dr Igor Iezhitsa gave an overview of rodent models of Alzheimer's disease that do not use genetically modified animals. Mohd Aizuddin Mohd Lazaldin then demonstrated the stereotaxic technique for injecting beta-amyloid 1-40 into the hippocampus. The last two hours went to the behavioural tasks used to test hippocampus-dependent learning and memory in rats: passive avoidance (step-down), active avoidance and learned helplessness, followed by a demonstration of a multiple activity meter.
