Prima Nexus invited to speak at the 7th MySOT AGM, and sponsored UPM's rodent care and use workshop in 2017

From the Prima Nexus archive: a look back at March to May 2017.

SERDANG, 3 May 2017: Prima Nexus sponsored the Workshop on the Care & Use of Rodents in Research 2017, organised by the Comparative Medicine and Technology Unit (COMeT) and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), at the Institute of Bioscience in Serdang on 3 and 4 May 2017. Earlier, on 28 March, the Malaysian Society of Toxicology (MySOT) had invited Prima Nexus to give the scientific talk at its 7th Annual General Meeting, held at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in Kuala Lumpur.

An invited talk at MySOT's annual meeting

MySOT held its 7th Annual General Meeting in the faculty meeting room of the Faculty of Health Sciences, on the UKM Kuala Lumpur campus on Jalan Raja Muda Abdul Aziz. The scientific talk on the agenda was given by Prima Nexus. It introduced specific-pathogen-free (SPF) laboratory animal strains and facilities, and covered health monitoring and the SPF criteria used in rodent management. SPF animals are free of a defined list of infections, and health monitoring checks that they stay that way.

Two days on working with laboratory rodents

At UPM, the workshop ran in Tongkat Ali's Room, on Level 4 of the Institute of Bioscience, and was open to participants from UPM and from other institutions. The talks covered the legal and ethical rules for using animals in research, rodent anatomy and physiology, pain and anaesthesia management and the IACUC UPM application forms, then sample size and statistics in animal experiments, rodent strains and their names, nutrition for laboratory rodents, and animal welfare and humane end points. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Goh Yong Meng and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chen Hui Cheng gave the talks, and Dr. Mohd Hafidz Mohd Izhar of COMeT led the group demonstrations with COMeT staff before participants practised at the bench.

Prima Nexus was invited to give the MySOT talk, and was a sponsor of the UPM workshop, which it had also sponsored in October 2016 and sponsored again in December 2017. Today Prima Nexus runs animal studies in rats and mice for research groups in Malaysia, and no animal work starts until the study has animal ethics (IACUC) approval.
