Prima Nexus Supports UiTM Expert Roundtable on the Perio-Metabolic-Cardio Connection
World-renowned periodontist Prof. Mariano Sanz was invited to UiTM Sungai Buloh, where he and Malaysian specialists asked whether gum disease could become a marker for metabolic syndrome.

SUNGAI BULOH, SELANGOR, 14 September 2026: Prima Nexus Sdn Bhd supported “Breaking Barriers: The Perio-Metabolic-Cardio Connection”, an international public lecture and expert roundtable held on 14 September 2026 at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Sungai Buloh. The session brought periodontists, cardiologists, endocrinologists and other clinicians together to discuss gum disease, cardiovascular disease and metabolic conditions such as diabetes, not as isolated diseases but from the perspective of the same patient.
One patient, three specialties
The programme was organised by UiTM's Cardiovascular Advancement and Research Excellence Institute and the UiTM Faculty of Dentistry. Prof. Sanz, who chaired the consensus report on periodontitis and cardiovascular diseases by the European Federation of Periodontology and the World Heart Federation, opened with a lecture titled “The Cardioperiodontal-Metabolic Axis: Can Oral Health Save Hearts?”
The roundtable that followed brought Prof. Sanz together with Prof. Dr Rohana Abd Ghani, consultant endocrinologist at UiTM and President of the Malaysian Obesity Society; Prof. Dr Sazzli Shahlan Kasim, consultant cardiologist and Director of UiTM's Cardiovascular Advancement and Research Excellence Institute; and Dr Norjehan Yahaya, consultant in special care dentistry and head of the Special Care Dentistry Unit at Hospital Kuala Lumpur. It was moderated by periodontist Dr Mohd Salman Masri.
Bringing the question home to Malaysia
The discussion kept returning to Malaysia: how can these disciplines work more closely together when cardiovascular disease and diabetes are such significant health burdens in the population?
The science is complex, and association does not necessarily mean causation. But the shared roles of chronic inflammation, metabolic dysfunction and common risk factors make this an important area for continued research and clinical discussion.
