A two-day workshop at the Institute of Bioscience, Universiti Putra Malaysia, on 5 and 6 December 2017, with talks and hands-on sessions on handling mice and taking blood samples.

About the workshop
The Comparative Medicine and Technology Unit (COMeT) and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) jointly organised this workshop. It ran in the Tongkat Ali's Room, on Level 4 of the Institute of Bioscience in Serdang. The programme covered the rules, animal welfare and practical skills that apply when rodents are used in research. Participants could register for the theory sessions only or for the full days.
What the programme covered
On the first day, Assoc Prof Dr Chen Hui Cheng spoke on the requirements of the IACUC UPM forms, the legal and ethical rules for using animals in research, pain and anaesthesia management for rodents, and animal welfare and humane end points. In the afternoon, Dr Mohd Hafidz Mohd Izhar of the Institute of Bioscience and the COMeT staff led a group demonstration and hands-on session on handling mice and taking blood samples.
On the second day, Assoc Prof Dr Goh Yong Meng covered rodent strains and how they are named, sample size and statistics in laboratory animal experiments, nutrition for laboratory rodents, and rodent anatomy and physiology. The afternoon was a second hands-on session on handling and blood sampling.
