A two-day workshop at UPM
NIDSAW (National Infectious Disease Seminar and Workshop) 2016 was organised by the Department of Medical Microbiology and Parasitology, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia. It ran on 31 May and 1 June 2016 at the faculty in Serdang. The workshop was open to academics, laboratory staff, researchers and postgraduate students working with laboratory rodents and molecular biology in infectious disease research, and places were limited to 50.
What the programme covered
On the first day, Assoc. Prof. Dr Abdul Rahim Mutalib of UPM lectured on animal ethics and infectious diseases in animal studies, and Prof. Dr Abdul Rahman Omar of UPM spoke on the UPM IBC requirements for studies that involve infectious agents. In the practical sessions each participant worked with their own rodent, covering handling, injection sites, blood and urine collection, organ collection and preservation, and the management and disposal of infected mice and rats.
The second day turned to gene expression. Assoc. Prof. Dr Malina Osman of UPM gave a talk on statistics, and participants then had hands-on sessions on real-time PCR and on microarray software analysis with statistical calculation. The workshop had two aims: to share knowledge on the management of laboratory rodents and to ensure their proper use, and to introduce the theory and hands-on techniques of molecular biology.
