New Animal Models of Type 2 Diabetes: SDT and SDT Fatty Rat

Two researchers from Japan presented the SDT and SDT fatty rats, two rat models of type 2 diabetes, at an afternoon seminar at PPUKM in Kuala Lumpur.

About the seminar

The Department of Pharmacology at Pusat Perubatan Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (PPUKM) hosted the seminar in its Level 17 seminar room in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, on 27 July 2017, from 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm. Prima Nexus co-organised it with Nomura Siam International, a laboratory animal company based in Bangkok, and CLEA Japan. In a letter to the department, Nomura Siam International said the aim was to share knowledge with researchers who work with animal models, especially diabetic rat models.

Two rat models of type 2 diabetes

Two scientists from the Central Pharmaceutical Research Institute of Japan Tobacco Inc. gave the talks. Dr Takeshi Ohta, Special Senior Research Scientist, presented the SDT fatty rat, an obese model of type 2 diabetes. Dr Tomohiko Sasase, Senior Research Scientist, presented the Spontaneously Diabetic Torii (SDT) rat, a non-obese model. Nomura Siam International also introduced its laboratory animal work.

The PPUKM seminar was one stop on a tour by the two speakers. They spoke at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) on the morning of the same day, and at the Laboratory Animal Trade Exhibition 2017 in Bangkok two days earlier.

Prima Nexus's part

Prima Nexus co-organised the seminar with Nomura Siam International and took the registrations. The Prima Nexus logo appears on the seminar poster beside those of Nomura Siam International and CLEA Japan. Today Prima Nexus runs animal studies in rats and mice for Malaysian research groups, including induced models and glucose tolerance tests.
