About the course
The course took place from 5 to 9 July 2017 in Auditorium T.J. Danaraj at the Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur. It was organised by the university's Department of Medical Microbiology and Department of Parasitology. Its aim was to extend knowledge of recent developments in immunology. The five-day programme was designed for biomedical students, clinicians, academics and scientists who wanted extensive knowledge and skills in immunology and its use in research and therapy.
What the programme covered
The lectures covered the molecules, mediators and cells behind immune responses: MHC, antigen receptors and co-stimulatory molecules; cytokines, chemokines and hormones; and T and B lymphocytes, antigen-presenting cells and innate cells. The focus was on immune responses against infectious diseases, cancer, autoimmunity and allergy. Participants received handouts of the lectures and a certificate of participation.
Professor Shiv Pillai of Harvard Medical School is one of the authors of the textbook Cellular and Molecular Immunology. His research includes the use of the immune system to treat cancer and new therapies for chronic diseases such as arthritis and lupus. Professor Liew Foo Yew of the University of Glasgow is known for his work on T cell heterogeneity and on the role of nitric oxide in regulating the immune system.
