Workshop on the Care & Use of Rodents in Research 2017
A two-day workshop at Universiti Putra Malaysia on the rules, science and hands-on skills of working with laboratory rodents, held on 3 and 4 May 2017. Prima Nexus sponsored it.
· Workshop · Sponsored by Prima Nexus
About the workshop
The Comparative Medicine and Technology Unit (COMeT) and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) of Universiti Putra Malaysia jointly organised the workshop. It took place in Tongkat Ali's Room, on Level 4 of the Institute of Bioscience at UPM in Serdang. It was open to participants from UPM and from other institutions.
What the programme covered
The talks covered the legal and ethical rules for using animals in research, rodent anatomy and physiology, pain and anaesthesia management, and what the IACUC UPM application forms ask for. Later talks dealt with sample size and statistics in animal experiments, rodent strains and their names, nutrition for laboratory rodents, and animal welfare and humane end points.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Goh Yong Meng and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chen Hui Cheng gave the talks. Dr. Mohd Hafidz Mohd Izhar of COMeT led the group demonstrations with COMeT staff. Participants then put on gowns, masks and gloves and practised handling mice and taking blood samples themselves at the bench.
Prima Nexus's part
Prima Nexus sponsored the workshop and supplied folders, pens, notepads and Prima Nexus bags for the participants. Today Prima Nexus runs animal studies in rats and mice for research groups in Malaysia, and no animal work starts until the study has animal ethics (IACUC) approval.
