3D Tissue Culture Workshop 2017

The workshop and its host
The Tissue Engineering Centre (TEC) at UKM Medical Centre ran the workshop from 23 to 25 May 2017, from 8.00am to 5.00pm each day. It was held at the centre on the 12th floor of the Clinical Block, UKM Medical Centre, in Kuala Lumpur. The first morning opened with a welcome speech by the head of the centre. Each day then combined presentations with longer hands-on sessions at the bench.
What the programme covered
There were four presentations: primary human cells in tissue engineering; isolating, culturing and characterising primary cells; scaffold fabrication and 3D culture; and imaging for 3D culture. Bench sessions ran between them. On the first day participants processed skin tissue and prepared a collagen hydrogel scaffold. On the second day, working in four groups, they detached cells with trypsin for serial culture, froze cells for storage and made PLGA scaffolds by electrospinning. On the last day they thawed and seeded the frozen cells and maintained the cultures.
The final session used an image analyser to measure how cells grow and move without disturbing them. The programme also included a demonstration of aseptic technique and the preparation of buffers and culture media, a laboratory tour and a question-and-answer session on cell culture.

Prima Nexus sponsored the workshop in kind, providing folders, pens and notepads for the participants. The folders carried the Prima Nexus name and were set out at the registration table, and the notepads and pens were used for notes during the sessions.
