About the workshop
The Unit of Comparative Medicine and Technology (COMeT) at the Institute of Bioscience, Universiti Putra Malaysia, and the university's Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC UPM) jointly organised the workshop. It ran on 25 and 26 October 2016 in the Tongkat Ali Room, Level 4, Institute of Bioscience, in Serdang. Registration was open to participants from UPM and from other institutions.
What the programme covered
Day one covered the legal and ethical rules for using animals in research, rodent anatomy and physiology, pain and anaesthesia management, and the requirements of the IACUC UPM forms. Day two covered sample size and statistics in laboratory animal experiments, rodent strains and nomenclature, nutrition for laboratory rodents, and welfare and humane end points.
The lectures were given by Assoc. Prof Dr Goh Yong Meng and Assoc. Prof Dr Chen Hui Cheng. Each afternoon was given to a group demonstration and hands-on session led by Dr Mohd Hafidz Mohd Izhar and COMeT staff: handling and blood sampling techniques in mice on the first day, and in rats on the second.
