Molecular Medicine Research Day 2016

The day at Universiti Malaya

The Research Day was held at the Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, on 31 May 2016 and ran from 8.00 am to 4.00 pm. Registration, the posters and the sponsors' booths were at Centrepoint, and the talks were held in the department's lecture theatre. Academics and students registered in advance with the department. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sarni Mat Junit, Head of the Department of Molecular Medicine, gave the welcome remarks, and Prof. Dr. Adeeba Kamarulzaman, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, gave the opening speech.

Five talks, posters and booths

Five talks filled the morning. Prof. Dr. Fazlul H. Sarkar spoke on microRNA as a molecular bridge between diabetes and cancer, and Prof. Dr. Sekaran Muniandy on dipeptidyl peptidase-4 gene polymorphism. Prof. Dr. Tan Nget Hong covered bioactive proteins from nature, Prof. Dr. Onn Haji Hashim spoke on lectin-based proteomic studies for cancer biomarker discovery, and Prof. Datuk Dr. Rohana Yusof on the design and development of antivirals against dengue.

Between the opening and the talks, participants viewed research posters and visited the sponsors' booths over the morning tea break. Lunch was a Science Café in the department's meeting room, sponsored by the Malaysian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (MSBMB). The afternoon at Centrepoint went back to the posters and the sponsors' booths, with games and afternoon tea until 4.00 pm.

Prima Nexus as a sponsor

Prima Nexus sponsored the Research Day in kind, with Prima Nexus folders, pens and A5 notepads for the participants. The folders were handed out at the registration desk. After the event, the Department of Molecular Medicine wrote to Prima Nexus to thank the company for its participation and contribution as a sponsor. Prima Nexus supports researchers who measure protein biomarkers through its ELISA and Luminex services.
