The welfare and ethical use of animals in research has been of great concern among the scientific community as well as the public worldwide. Many studies have shown that inconsistent and skewed data are most often the result when the welfare of the animals were not taken care of adequately. This then leads to wastage of animals as well as unnecessary loss of animal lives. Many countries have addressed this issue by passing laws and legislation to regulate the care and use of animals in research and teaching. Malaysia has recently passed the Malaysian Animal Welfare Act in December 2015. With the enactment of this Act, the care and use of animals in research and teaching in Malaysia will be regulated and monitored in terms of their welfare and ethical use. One of the requirements under this Act is the mandatory establishment of an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) or an Animal Ethics Committee (AEC) within institutions that use animals for these purposes. The primary objective of this committee is to ensure that the animals are used ethically and their welfare safeguarded by reviewing research protocols and conducts evaluations of the institution's animal care and use program, which includes inspections of the animal facilities.
