NEUROSCIENCE WORKSHOP SERIES 2: EXPERIMENTAL MODELS IN NEURODEGENERATIVE DISEASES
Date:

Centre for Neuroscience Research (NeuRon), Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Teknologi MARA
Organized by:
Centre for Neuroscience Research (NeuRon)

NTRODUCTION

Alzheimer’s disease, stroke and glaucoma are the most common age-dependent neurodegenerative disease, which altogether affect over 110 million people worldwide. In 2015, there were approximately 29.8 million people worldwide with Alzheimer’s disease. Glaucoma is second leading cause of irreversible blindness and according to the World Health Organization about 80 million people will have glaucoma by 2020. Stroke is the number two cause of death in the world as stated by the WHO data in 2012. Annually, 15 million people worldwide suffer a stroke.

Currently, only four drugs are approved for alleviating symptoms in AD patients, and no new therapy has been approved for AD since 2003. Other neurodegenerative diseases such as stroke and glaucoma also lack effective therapies. Hence, finding cure for these neurodegenerative diseases is urgent and various approaches should be actively pursued. Hence, investigations into the knowledge of pathophysiological processes and development of safe and effective therapeutic measures to reduce morbidity due to these diseases are of prime importance. However, experimental methods used to study neuroprotection and prevention of the neurodegeneration are not widely known. Hence we propose to organize a workshop to demonstrate common procedures undertaken to carry out research in investigations related to neurodegeneration and neuroprotection.

OBJECTIVES

  1. To enhance the knowledge of participants regarding commonly used procedures in investigations related to neurodegeneration and neuroprotection in animals.

  2. To provide hands-on experience of commonly used procedures in investigations related to  neurodegeneration and neuroprotection in animals.
