NEUROSCIENCE WORKSHOP SERIES 1: METHODS IN EXPERIMENTAL OPHTHALMOLOGY 2017
Date:
16 Nov 2017 to 17 Nov 2017
Time:
8:00am - 5:00pm
Location:
Faculty of Medicine, UiTM Sungai Buloh
Organized by:
Neuroscience Department

Considering the world population of 300-400 million blind people, investigations into the visual sciences are a key area of research. Among the causes of blindness the neurodegenerative diseases affecting retina, the neurosensory part of eye, are amongst the most common causes besides cataract. It is common knowledge that currently available therapeutic options in these blinding diseases are sub-optimally effective and often the disease progression continues despite optimal treatment. Hence, investigations into the knowledge of pathophysiological processes and development of safe and effective therapeutic measures to reduce blindness related morbidity are of prime importance. However, the methods used in experimental ophthalmology are not widely known. Hence we propose to organize a workshop to demonstrate common procedures undertaken to carry out research in experimental Ophthalmology.

OBJECTIVES

  • To familiarize participants with the common ocular pathologies and the most active areas of research in experimental ophthalmology.
  • To enhance the knowledge of participants regarding commonly used procedures in investigative ophthalmology in animals.
  • To provide hands-on experience to participants commonly used procedures in investigative ophthalmology in animals.
